When I think about rock and roll, I think of Kiss, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Def Leppard, and the Eagles. These bands are composed of men, with the genre being mostly run by them for a long time. They have wonderful songs, but women bring a different sound to the genre. With bands such as Fleetwood Mac becoming mainstream, a woman’s voice became more popular within the genre. Stevie Nicks, one of the most influential artists in the sound of rock and lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1998 for the second time. The ’90s and 2000s saw an influx of women’s influence in the rock genre, with Gwen Stefani of No Doubt, Courtney Love of Hole, and Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries creating the overall feeling of the decade’s rock music with songs “Just a Girl,” “Celebrity Skin,” and “Zombie.” These artists remained mainstream in the 2000s, with other female rock artists such as Avril Lavigne and P!NK appearing on the scene. However, the recession of the 2010s brought a time when rock was put on the back burner, and club hits such as “DJ Got Us Fallin in Love” by Usher took over the charts. Pop music was the sound of the decade. However, Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album “SOUR,” released in 2021, brought a taste of what was to come in the 2020s with her songs “Brutal” and “Jealousy Jealousy” having a rock-heavy influence. Rock is now back in full swing with the release of Rodrigo’s sophomore album “GUTS,” a pop rock album, and Chapelle Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” being a song on the charts with a rock feel. Even underground artists, such as the rock band of sisters called The Warning, have become more popular this decade. Overall, women have brought back the sound of rock in this decade and have made it their own. They’re just girls!
