Since 2016, February 11th has been dedicated to celebrating all women and girls in STEM. This international holiday honors the lives of females who have devoted time to scientific developments and deserve to receive recognition, as well as encourage gender-equal roles. Here at Brandon High School, the Science Olympiad team consists of 9 talented women: Kadence Anding — Captain, Ryan Herkender, Alaina Tang, Laila Henderson, Bei Zi Ren, Rebecca Jenkins, Hadiya Penn, Michaela Penn, and Ellie Lin. This activity is an academic event crafted to inspire students to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program offers a level of difficulty that challenges students to think creatively to solve real-world problems. Every participant will compete in events that could include building, testing of knowledge, inquiry-based, or a robotics event. The Science Olympiad team is a fantastic opportunity to get exposed to various fields of science and encourages students to pursue careers in STEM. Through this team, these girls can tour several diverse challenges that provide a well-rounded understanding of science. For this, every one of these girls deserves recognition for their interest and involvement in STEM.
