Every day, students branch out and create lasting relationships with truly amazing individuals. Whether these relationships be romantic or simply platonic, any healthy relationship is one built on trust. While some may believe that abuse is an uncommon topic among both teen and adult relationships, ignorance may be society’s rose-tinted glasses. Abuse within a relationship is not limited to physical violence but can commonly be found in forms of sexual, emotional, or even psychological abuse. With statistics finding that 1 in every 12 students have experienced or continue to experience physical abuse in their relationships, as well as 1 in every 10 being victims of sexual abuse, raising awareness has been inflicted upon society, rightfully so. As a mode of introduction to the necessity of bringing awareness, Brandon High School’s student Mailey McAlpin founded the first Student Against Sexual Harassment (SASH) club practiced at BHS. The club expresses ideas of focusing on the truth behind society’s stigmas regarding sexual harassment. SASH club clarifies the very proposition of “sexual harassment” and “sexual assault” being deemed “bad” words being credited to the lack of awareness. These outstanding teenagers have brought awareness to a growing problem invading more and more relationships every day. SASH clubs all around the United States aid to educate students and adults to prevent this abuse from ever taking place.
