On December 29th, 2024, former president James “Jimmy” Earl Carter passed away shortly after his 100th birthday. Before becoming president, Carter was a peanut farmer. During his years in office as the 39th president, he expanded the National Park System by including the protection for 103 million acres of Alaskan land and appointed record numbers for women and people of color to government jobs. Carter also created the Department of Education. Many of his accomplishments focused on improving the wellbeing of people and the environment. Due to his various humanitarian efforts during and after his presidency, he received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Carter was the longest-lived president of the United States, as well as the first president to reach the age of 100.
