On October 30th, 2024, the HOSA Fall Leadership Conference occurred at the Jackson Convention Complex Center. A vast number of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) students from a variety of schools across Mississippi entered the center, and they were greeted by our valued HOSA Council. Concluding a quick introduction from the Council, they were introduced to the first guest speaker of the morning, Mrs. Priscilla Burks, Director of Practical Nursing at the Mississippi Board of Nursing. She took this opportunity to discuss her career as a Practical Nurse, along with the numerous colleges across Mississippi that provide sufficient opportunities for future healthcare professionals. She stressed the idea that no student should feel they must go out of state to acquire a respectable degree and education. After she closed her speech and thanked everyone for having her, all HOSA students were split into 4 different groups to attend 6 different medical presentations on the following topics: professionalism, respiratory therapy, alzheimer’s and dementia, CPR simulation, suicide prevention, and local colleges and institutions. This conference allowed students to gain insight and further information on future healthcare professions and the numerous pathways they can take to obtain that profession.
