On November 11th and 13th, Brandon High School’s Theater performed its first production. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was showcased by their Theatre 3 class. The Shakespearean play follows the love story of Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, and Helena. Hermia’s mother disregarded her interest in Lysander and announced that she would be marrying Dimitrius, who Helena was fascinated with. As a plan to escape a forced marriage, Lysander and Hermia run away into the woods so that they can be married without it being unlawful. After Helena tells Demetrius about their plan, Demetrius chases after them. To make Demetrius fall in love with Helena, Oberon orders Puck to find a flower that would make one fall in love with someone. Puck, who thought he was completing a task, unknowingly used the flower on Lysander, making him fall in love with Helena. This incident made Helena feel as though she was being punked, and Demetrius and Lysander began to feud over her. After watching the confusion unfold, Puck reverses the spell and each of the lovers finds their respective women; Lysander to Hermia, and Demetrius to Helena. Throughout all of this chaos, the Mechanicals practiced and planned a play to perform at the ceremony following the marriage of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Each character’s performance within the play overall was so intriguing and perfect. A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a chaotic and comedic addition to Brandon High School’s Theatre program!
